Peter Stuyvesant (1592-1672) was the Dutch colonist who became the last Dutch Director-General of the colony of New Netherland from 1647 until it was ceded provisionally to the English in 1664, after which it was renamed New York.

 Peter Stuyvesant Fact 12In 1653, following various disputes, the first municipal government for the city of New Amsterdam was established and modelled after that of the cities of Holland
