George Washington (February 22, 1732 – December 14, 1799) was a member of the landed gentry in the Virginia Colony. He gained his military experience leading the Virginia militia during the French and Indian War (1754–1763). He entered the political arena when he was elected to the Virginia House of Burgesses. When the Revolutionary War erupted he was place in command of the Continental Army(1775–1783).
