Battle of Camden Battle of Camden Definition: the Battle of Camden was a military conflict between the Kingdom of Great Britain and its thirteen colonies in North America during the American Revolutionary War (1775-1783). Overview and Summary of the Battle of Camden The Siege of Charleston ended in victory for the British. Sir Henry Clinton sailed back to New York, and left to Lord Cornwallis the further conquest of the Carolinas. In June 1780 the American General Horatio Gates arrived in the South and immediately marched for Camden, South Carolina to capture the outpost there. Lord Cornwallis learned of the American force under Gates and marched from Charleston to meet the American forces in Camden. On Wednesday, August 16, 1780 the two armies met on the battlefield. The experienced British soldiers easily intimidated the inexperienced militia that made up two-thirds of the force led by General Gates. Many militia fled before even firing a shot and General Horatio Gates had no alternative but to retreat.
